Forgot to mention about Whaling in the Western Cape that I have numerous photos of the boats, stations and people of that era. Not sure who they are but understand they are part of the whalers.

Looking for NICKOLAS CAPANA from about 1870 onwards whose family of father and sons (Nickolas being one son) whalers around the Western Cape, or Robben Island . Nickolas married in the western cape and did not go on with the rest of the family WHALING. Mention of Norwegian boats was the employment , and later when Johnson started the fishing company in early 1920-1930's

As part of my family research, I came across fishingboatheritage.com and found that my grandfather William Nichols was only one of 3 survivors of SN 275 Lily sunk after striking a mine on 7.10.1914.

I have a brass model harpoon identical to the example on your homepage. I wonder how many were made? My Grandfather Norman Watt worked for the company from 1919 (the year it was taken over by Lever Bros) until 1940. He named the utility vessels after his two boys Peter and Paul, I think he may have been the operations director.

i stumbled upon this whilst looking for information on my great great grandfather Captain Rochester, it was lovely to see his life has made it onto the internet and to see pictures of the ships he sailed. we recently found the flags from the sound of jura and the lakemba, it was surreal holding a piece of history in my own hands. thankyou very much for putting this online its a pleasure to look over, and thankyou to the Henderson family for the beautiful doll'shouse that was made for Captain Rochester's daughter Katherine, my daughter, another Katherine, Captain Rochester's great great great granddaughter spends many happy hours playing with it as i did and my mother, grandmother, and great grandmother did before her.

Thank you for such an interesting website. I was drawn to it because I recently discovered that the son of a great grand aunt, namely William Clift, was drowned at sea while serving on The Sound of Jura in 1911. In the 1911 census for South Shields he is described a a pilot at his home address, so I don't understand how he came to be on this ship unless he decided to go to sea after the census. Alternatively he might have drowned while boarding the ship from the pilot vessel. I need to find the ship's log to know if it was at sea on 6th October 1911 and hope to find this out at Tyne & wear Archives next time I can spend time in Newcastle. Best regards, Eileen

Hello, just saying hi. The photographer you mentioned 'Etienne Peau' is a relative of mine. My grandmother being a Peau from Le Harve left and came to America after WW2. This was her uncle I believe. I did not know this on him. Very informing. Thank You.
